Born in 1954, the American artist Troy Brauntuch is known as an exponent of the Pictures Generation. This 1970s artistic movement consists in taking images from mass media and copying them onto canvases, in doing so, giving them a different meaning. Brauntuch copies newspaper images, transferring them onto canvas and giving them an air of mystery. He does this by means of a very specific technique: starting with a black canvas, he uses a white pencil to gradually bring out his chosen image. As we look at his canvases, we have to stop, look and look again until our mind composes the image and gives it more precise colours and forms. All that’s required is a bit of time.
