Latifa Echakhch was born in Morocco in 1974 but despite her Moroccan origins, she has always lived and studied in France. Having two places of origin comes through very clearly in her art. She herself says she has, “the impression of having grown up in an indefinite reality”: neither North African nor European, but instead in a place made up of the two countries. Vague memories of her childhood in Morocco sometimes provide inspiration for her works, which often deal with political and social themes. She often observes and ‘activates’ an object, as she herself says, in doing so, revealing its hidden meaning.
