Born in Belgium in 1969, David Claerbout works with photography, video, sound and digital art. His works aren’t ‘narratives’, since he doesn’t tell a story that has a beginning, a middle and an end, as a film director would. Instead, he plays with images (both moving and still images) to create videos that have a timeless atmosphere. Using the latest digital technologies like scans and 3D rendering, his works disturb the viewer’s vision. Seeing his images on a screen isn’t enough: you have to literally immerse yourself in the videos to understand what’s happening. The true protagonist of Claerbout’s works is something that cannot be seen nor touched but which rules our lives: time.
