Takashi Murakami was born in Japan in 1962. With his works, he attempts to revolutionise the contemporary art world, both in his own country and abroad. Blessed with a strong entrepreneurial spirit, he tries to blur the boundary between museum art and industrial and commercial productions. Have you ever thought of wearing a Murakami? Well, you could do so. The artist has in fact collaborated with Louis Vuitton, Rolex and Vans, designing bags, shoes, t-shirts and watches. And not just fashion either. He made a music video for Pharrel Williams called ‘It Girl’, in which the famous singer takes on the appearance of a Manga character. All of Murakami’s art is inspired by Otaku culture (a Japanese subculture of Manga fans). He himself defines his art as ‘superflat’: as in traditional Japanese art, his elements are flattened on a hazy background, and there is no perspective nor sense of three-dimensionality. Murakami adopts this approach in many of his works, for example ‘The Emergence of God at the Reversal of Fate’, exhibited at Palazzo Grassi in 2011. *** Takashi Murakami’s biography was written by Sara Pilla, Emma Regazzo and Leonardo Verona from the Marco Polo High School in Venice during a work experience placement at Palazzo Grassi.
