Philippe Parreno’s La Marquee is a Hollywood-style canopy made in 2013 for the exhibition Prima Materia at Punta della Dogana. It’s suspended over the museum’s entrance as if to welcome visitors. This object, which we usually find at the entrance to cinemas and theatres, evokes something that is never missing from contemporary art: the desire to provoke and stun with special effects! But something doesn’t make sense: the canopy’s light is weak and flickering. With this, Parreno alludes to something mysterious and ghostly, which leaves us in doubt: should we really enter?
