Mark Grotjahn’s series of paintings Turkish Forest recreate a strange atmosphere that recalls an exotic forest. The title creates the impression of being in the middle of a tangled forest. Grotjahn creates an irregular surface similar to a relief using thick layers of colour laid down and modelled with a palette knife. In each painting, there are oval forms that evoke primitive masks, and suggest the presence of mysterious figures looking out at us from the wilderness of nature.
