DETTO TRA NOI 1

BLACK MONKS OF MISSISSIPPI

tag tema

Theaster Gates made Supreme Flag in 2013. As in all his works, he uses a material that has an important significance for him: in this case, a fire hose, which refers symbolically to the fight for civil rights. It recalls in particular to the peaceful protests that took place in Alabama in 1963, when a crowd of black protesters were violently repressed by the police fire hoses. The hose is now used by Gates to construct this enormous work, which more than a painting, resembles the flag of an unknown country.
