One night in 1996, an Afro-American artist is walking the streets of New York wearing a hat and long coat. His name is Hammons, David Hammons. The man is going around alone kicking a can, while being filmed by a TV camera. He doesn’t know it yet, but he has made a work of art. In this case, it’s not the video but the act itself. The sound of the aluminium on the asphalt synchronises with the artist’s movements and becomes the accompaniment. With an empty can discarded in the street and the sound of his own feet, Hammons has created a simple and hypnotic jazz improvisation.
