In Escalator, Vidya Gastaldon presents a vision of the rainbow: a short and elusive experience, which she tries to recreate within an enclosed space. Escalator isn’t a drawing, or a painting, or the usual sculpture: it’s an actual rainbow made of wool. The rainbow lies at the heart of so many stories, one being The Wizard of Oz. Vidya Gastaldon acknowledges that there is a reference to Dorothy here, in particular to when the unhappy young girl wants to escape to the beautiful place that’s over the rainbow. Gastaldon miraculously transforms the rainbow into a soft, woollen rainfall, as if Dorothy’s desire – and that of the child within us all – has finally been granted.
