Dan Flavin, Monument for V. Tatlin, 1964 IDL © PG
Vladimir Tatlin was a Russian artist who, in 1919, designed a monument to the Third International, the global Communist party organisation. The monument, which was never realised, was meant to be 400-metres high and made of iron and steel. In 1964, Dan Flavin dedicated an entire group of works to Vladimir Tatlin and to his unrealised project. His Monument V. Tatlin belongs to this series. Like Tatlin’s monument, Dan Flavin’s work is a cold, solid structure, made of industrial material. Nonetheless, thanks to the neon light, it also has a utopian, idealist and visionary dimension.
