In this work by Antoni Muntadas, made in 1980, there are two sources of light: a candle and a lamp. It’s a metaphoric image: the lights, one natural and the other artificial, illuminate whatever is emerging from the half shadow, and consuming energy. The work is called Dialogue. What’s the dialogue here? Between two technologies? Two historical epochs? Two worlds? We can only imagine what the candle and lamp are saying to each other but their exchange is destined to end: as the candle burns down and the lamp goes out, the dialogue will end in darkness.
