The work Fantôme (Jasmin) is connected to a memory. One day, in the middle of traffic in Beirut, the artist Latifa Echakhch saw a street seller with jasmine. The man had covered the jasmine with a white shirt to protect the flowers’ smell and freshness. Echakhch was fascinated by this act, and this beautiful image became for her a symbol of resistance in the midst of a crazy society. Soon after the ‘Arab Spring’ popular revolts in Egypt and across north Africa, she decided to recreate the flower seller’s act: she hung the jasmine on a perch and covered them with a shirt. Once the flowers wilt, they are replaced by fresh flowers. The jasmine evokes the cycle of history and of life itself, in which death, violence, and revolutions can bring about rebirth.
