In David Claerbout’s work, a group of workers in a western refinery in Africa are sheltering from torrential rain. Where was this photograph taken? It isn’t known. The artist found it on the internet and with the help of digital 3D techniques, he injected movement into the composition, transforming it into a video. There are four main elements: water, in a continent where drought is a major phenomenon; petrol, a source of wealth for some and exploitation for others; time, which seems to have stopped; and the powerless workers, facing a destiny that they cannot change.
