Bruce Conner was inspired to make this work in 1976 when, in the National Archive in Washington D.C., he discovered videos about atomic tests the US government carried out in the Pacific Ocean in 1964. Conner bought the videos and edited them together. He slowed them down, chose different frames and ranges, he repeated them several times and added an impactful sound track: a hypnotic electronic composition by Terri Riley. Thanks to Riley’s music, these destroying images of the atomic bomb lose their negative connotations and miraculously generate the opposite emotions: peace and ecstasy.
