In 2005 Fischli and Weiss find an enormous tree root. Weighing 200kg, on one side it is cracked and formless and on the other, it is cut with a saw – perfectly. Eureka! This seemingly insignificant object perfectly examplifies the duality of the world: nature juxtaposed with man; curves juxtaposed with straight lines; formlessness juxtaposed with perfection. They can’t leave it like that! So Fischli and Weiss take it into a specialist workshop and make a cast of it out of polyurethane, a very light material used to insulate buildings. The 200 kilograms of wood are thus transformed into a few grams of foam rubber: the heaviness of the real is juxtaposed with the lightness of the model. Satisfied, Fischli and Weiss declare: ‘Thanks to these extraordinary techniques, through which a heavy tree trunk can be replicated with a very light material, one day we will succeed to make an enormous mountain, as soft as a cushion!”
