Elmgreen & Dragset have made various sculptures called ‘Powerless structures’. These works of art have absolutely no purpose, as such! For Punta della Dogana, the two artists exhibited a diving board with a small steps leading up to it, like those we find in a swimming pool. However, the diving board is impossible to use because it passes through one of the museum’s windows, which blocks the jumper’s movement. This work can be interpreted as an invitation to escape from the museum: in fact, looking at it makes us toy with the idea of jumping ourselves, but unable to do so, we are attracted to an object that in another context, we would not even notice. That is the magic of Elmgreen & Dragset: the two artists succeed in transforming everyday objects into veritable emotional triggers.
