Made in 1992, "Untitled (Blood)" by Félix González-Torres is a scintillating curtain that hangs from the ceiling in a sequence of six red-bead strings alternated with white beads. The work refers to red and white blood cells, and is a poetic metaphor for blood, a very important element in González-Torres’s life. The artist, ill with AIDS, stated that the work was a homage to his companion Ross, who died of the same disease. The curtain calls to mind various opposing conditions: normal and diverse; ill and healthy; life and death – and it represents a barrier – which is not unsurmountable but can be overcome simply by stepping through the beads.
