Many artists deal with the theme of violence and suffering in the modern world, as emotions that form part of life. Suffering is part of the human mystery; it can be whispered, recounted, shouted, denied and repressed. Artists, through their sensibility and ability to see beyond appearances, and through their manual skill, know how to represent it in an intense and profound manner. In a similar way, even the nineteenth-century Italian poet Giacomo Leopardi thought about it. In his text ‘A garden of suffering’, written in 1826 and included in his commonplace book Zibaldone, Leopardi tells us how, behind the apparent beauty of a green garden, hides the cruel reality of pain and suffering, and a bitter fight between the living beings that inhabit it.
