During the Renaissance, beauty and the imitation of nature went hand-in-hand, so for a work of art to be beautiful, it had to imitate nature as faithfully as possible. In contemporary art, artists can be inspired by anything from the long life of a tree, the imposing mountains, the fascination of the sky and the sea, for various reasons. Giuseppe Penone, who belonged to the Arte Povera movement said: ‘Man is nature, his actions are natural and he has the same beauty and cruelty as nature’. The Land Art movement Christo, who was born in Bulgaria and later settled in France, is famous for ‘wrapping up’ natural places. Other artists insert nature into their works, like Anselm Kiefer who attaches roots and shrubs onto his canvases, in doing so imbuing them with mystical and philosophical meanings. Mark Grotjhan with his forests, Twombly with his flowers and Roni Horn with her crystalline wells are all inspired by the natural world, imitating it and reproducing it in their paintings and sculptures.
