As consumer society evolved and images were reproduced and spread via mass media, appropriation and appropriation artists multiplied. Sherrie Levine, in her work ‘Crystal Skull’, borrowed the skull we find in traditional paintings. Elaine Sturtevant multiplied a work by Felix Gonzalez-Torres made with lamps. And Bertrand Lavier transformed a painting by Frank Stella into a luminous sculpture worthy of the coolest disco in town!
