The beautiful thing about Llyn Foulkes’s works is that they are three-dimensional: the images, made of carved wood, found objects and layers of pasty materials, detach themselves from the surface. In Deliverance, made in 2007, Foulkes portrays himself shortly after shooting Mickey Mouse, who’s lying on the ground. Smoke made from cotton emerges from the gun-hole. Foulkes is looking at the scene, with a pistol in his hand. Mickey Mouse is dead and the assassin isn’t just anyone: the executioner is effectively the artist. As with any crime, there is also a witness: it’s the figure popping out of the window at the upper left. Nothing escapes his inquisitive eyes!
