We think of the world of art as a universe of colours: by mixing them, we obtain different tones and variations of shapes. But with his Achromes, Piero Manzoni does the exact opposite: his colourless works speak and communicate like all others.
The artist first soaks the canvas in the kaolin (white clay), however in his last Achromes he experimented new techniques and materials including cotton, fibreglass, feathers and polystyrene. In this Achrome made in 1962, Manzoni immersed six bread rolls into clay. The bread thus loses its main function (that is, something to eat) and becomes a permanent and solid witness to the artist’s action. Because art must never die!
