Roof for 2 ½ Tatami (Slightly Covered) is work made with tar, which for Theaster Gates recalls the American streets built by blacks and immigrants in the middle of the nineteenth century. His use of tar, a difficult material to work with, also refers to his own personal story: his father would use it on the roof of their house in Chicago, as a form of protest for the civil rights of black people. This enormous, completely black painting is seemingly insignificant, but it actually reveals personal memories and profound universal messages.
