Born in Algeria in 1974, after the civil war had begun, Adel Abdessemed later left his native country for France, and this move became a centripetal focus of his art: in his works, he often refers back to his past, and to the military coup and political repression in Algeria, although he does so indirectly. His works (sculptures, videos, photographs and drawings) are provocative, and his recurrent themes are ethnic conflict and the sense of distance from his homeland and belonging to it. In his works, the world is a battlefield. His sculptures, photographs and videos often feature skeletons, embalmed animals but also car and aeroplane wrecks. What are his key concerns?
