Light and Space Cowboy
Before he was an artist, Doug Wheeler would regularly be up at 4am, and already saddled up on his horse in the desolate lands of Arizona. During his morning rides, he immersed himself in the desert and its almost total silence. Wheeler would spend hours just looking at that glorious landscape. The sky gradually coming to life in that immense space inspired him, and gave him the idea of creating works in which light would be the absolute protagonist. Initially, he produced drawings and paintings, then installations as large as an entire room. So what is he trying to achieve? With his installations called ‘Infinity rooms’, Wheeler is trying to recreate the same feelings he has had since he was a boy looking at the infinite and enormous volume of light in the American desert.
