Martial Raysse’s boxes look insignificant when they are shut, but if we open these caskets, we discover a fantastic world! In Raysse’s colourful microcosm, there are landscapes made of painted mushrooms, papier-mâché, pearls and stones. With their microscopic objects and ordinary but precious materials, these boxes - made during the artist’s Coco Mato period - reflect Raysse’s myths and desires. He was also fascinated by psychedelic culture and the adventurous lives of the Beat Generation poets. The boxes contain Raysse’s imaginary journeys. With an incredible meticulousness and minute attention to detail, he transferred everything he had in his mind into these containers of invented stories, which we are lucky enough to be able to peek at from above.
