Throughout his life, Martial Raysse has collected all kinds of objects, travelled all over the world and come across the strangest popular beliefs. He then translated these different experiences into three dimensions. His ‘petites scultures’, or small sculptures, as he calls them, are tiny works made from different materials, from bronze to papier maché, from terracotta to fabric. Seen together, Raysse’s small sculptures conjure up a world populated by demons, lunar divinities, idols, fantastic animals, heroes with magic powers and wonderful, funny characters. Some are ironic: by mixing serious themes with these lighter representations, the artist wants to take the smile off our faces, and why not?!
